Winning the Kuskokwim 300 for the rst time was a dream come true. It had been I think 29 years since someone from Bethel had won the race – and nobody born in the region had ever won. A lot of people had been waiting a long time for something like that to happen, and it felt really good to deliver that to the community and the region.
It’s hard for me to even consider myself a role model. I think it’s great that people can look up to me or somebody like me, and if that helps them feel like they can accomplish something that maybe they didn’t feel like they could accomplish before, then I think that’s great – because a lot needs to be done to help kids set goals for themselves and work to achieve those goals; to have pride in themselves and in what they do.
I think Donlin Gold o ers that kind of opportunity. There aren’t as many employment opportunities here as there are in other places.
It doesn’t have to be the highest paying job in the world, but if it motivates you to get up out of bed in the morning and have pride in what you do, I think it helps everyone live a happier and healthier life.
