Rick Van Nieuwenhuyse, M.Sc. President and Chief Executive Officer Rick Van Nieuwenhuyse, M.Sc., is President and Chief Executive Officer of NovaGold Resources Inc. Since assuming management of NovaGold in 1998, Rick has assembled a portfolio of world-class properties and a team of top industry professionals who have turned NovaGold into one of North America's fastest growing mining companies, poised to become a mid-tier gold, silver and copper producer. Rick's vision and ability to follow through can be attributed to his 30 years of worldwide experience in the natural resource sector, including time as Vice President of Exploration at Placer Dome. He brings years of working experience and knowledge of Alaska, Western Canada, Africa and Asia, and has managed projects from grassroots discovery through to advanced Feasibility Studies and production. Rick holds a Candidature degree in Science from the Universite de Louvain in Belgium, and an M.Sc. in Geology from the University of Arizona.
Elaine Sanders, CA, CPA Vice President, Finance, Corporate Secretary, Interim CFO Elaine joined NovaGold in 2003 and has 15 years of experience in audit, finance and accounting with public and private companies. She has been involved with numerous financings and acquisitions, and has listed companies on both the TSX and AMEX. Elaine is responsible for all aspects of financial services, financial reporting and corporate governance. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Alberta and is a chartered accountant.
Gil Leathley Senior Advisor to the President Gil joined NovaGold in January 2010 as Senior Advisor to the President. As such, he will advise NovaGold on mining, technical and operation matters related to the Company's advanced projects. With more than 50 years of mining experience, Mr. Leathley has been involved in all aspects of mine construction and operations as well as evaluation of exploration properties and potential acquisitions. Mr. Leathley trained as a Mine Surveyor and Industrial Engineer with the Scottish National Coal Board. Mr. Leathley retired in 2000 as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Homestake Mining, and has since worked as a consultant for a number of well-respected Canadian mining companies.
Kevin Francis, M.Sc., P.Geo. Vice President, Technical Services Kevin joined NovaGold in October 2005 and manages all aspects of resource estimation, direct resource estimate activities, supervision of mining professionals, corporate development activities and the development of internal audit standards. He has more than 20 years of experience in integrating computerized geology and other mining disciplines to improve resource estimation and mine reconciliation. Before joining NovaGold he was the principal geologist at AMEC and also spent 8 years working at two operating mines. Kevin’s formal education includes a Bachelor in Geology and a Masters in Geology, both from the University of Colorado.
Sacha Iley, B.A. Vice President, Human Resources Sacha joined NovaGold as Human Resources Manager in May 2006, and was promoted to Vice President in June 2007. Her Human Resources background is well suited to NovaGold, with a unique combination of experience in a head office environment and also managing construction, start-up and operational aspects of Human Resources at a mine site. Prior to joining NovaGold, Sacha worked for Placer Dome for over 7 years. Her most recent assignment was with Placer Dome Canada as the Human Resources Superintendent at Musselwhite Mine, located north of Thunder Bay, Ontario. In addition, Sacha's construction and start-up experiences have taken her to such culturally diverse locations as South Deep Mine in South Africa, North Mara Mine in Tanzania and Henty Mine in Tasmania. Sacha holds a Bachelors Degree from the University of British Columbia.
Doug Nicholson, B.Sc. Vice President, NovaGold Alaska / General Manager, Alaska Gold Co. / President, Donlin Creek LLC Doug brings over 25 years of mine development and operation experience to NovaGold. Prior to joining the Company, Doug was in charge of mine development engineering at the Kinross Gold 400,000 ounce per year open-pit Fort Knox and True North deposits in Fairbanks, Alaska. Prior to his work at the Fort Knox and True North gold deposits, Doug was Chief Mine Engineer for Cambior at the Valdez Creek Mine in Alaska. Doug has a B.Sc. in Mine Engineering from the University of Alaska - Fairbanks.
Joe Piekenbrock, M.Sc. Vice President, Exploration Joe joined NovaGold in 2002 with over 25 years experience in the minerals exploration and development sector. He has managed exploration projects from grassroots discovery through advanced acquisitions. Prior to joining NovaGold, Joe worked extensively in South America, and he brings a wealth of northern experience through years of exploration for both Teck Cominco and Placer Dome in Alaska. Joe holds a B.A. in Geology from the University of Colorado and an M.Sc. in Geology from the University of Arizona.
Rhylin Bailie, B.ES. Director, Corporate & Investor Relations Rhylin joined NovaGold in August 2006 and brings a diverse background to her investor relations position. Rhylin has a degree in Environmental Studies & Biology and has worked as a freelance editor and writer for 8 years. Rhylin's industry experience includes more than 10 years in the Finance group at Placer Dome, managing the back office of Placer's Treasury department, and 4 years managing NovaGold's investor relations and communications initiatives.
